In April 2004, the President issued an executive order mandating the computerization of health records by the year 2014.  Most doctors are starting their search now to insure a smooth transition.
And so the journey begins........we've made making chiropractors' lives less stressful, our priority.   We improve practice efficiency and help with writing reports, and overall peace of mind when it comes to quality of patient records.

Its common these days to see people buying up vitamin C tabs, pills, and chewables at the beginning of cold and flu season. While some swear by the immune system boosting properties some still question whether these supplements really help. There are many studies that definitively show Vitamin C is needed by the body for production of collagen and without it you will eventually die of scurvy. Other studies have found benefits of the vitamin in other areas, making use of its antioxidant properties. While some claim the vitamin can be used in high doses to cure the common cold or lessen the degree and severity of illnesses. First off Vitamin C has been studied as an aid in fighting cancer. One exciting, but preliminary study was performed on live cancer cells in a test tube environment. Scientists administered infusions of Vitamin C to a set of nine cancer cell cultures and four normal cell cultures. The cancer cells had a fifty percent decrease in survival rate, while the normal cells appeared to be unaffected. The vitamin C appeared to kill cancer cells in a laboratory environment. While this is promising it should be noted that this is not a study that was performed in humans and many things can be promising in the laboratory but some things just don’t work out in the real world trials. Diabetics may be interested to know that Vitamin C is being studied as a way to increase the body’s receptiveness to insulin. The disease is partly characterized by the blood vessels inability to respond Nitric Oxide (NO) which is secreted by the walls of the blood vessel and encourage the muscles to relax increasing blood flow to the areas of the body. The vessel walls don’t relax and thus contribute to the body’s insulin resistance. It’s been confirmed that injections of vitamin C have been shown to improve vessel wall reaction to NO in diabetic patients. The new study is going to observe the effectiveness of oral vitamin C in Diabetic patients. There were many, many studies performed to try and determine whether vitamin C can indeed prevent the common cold. In the seventies there were a series of trial run by a team headed by a Dr. Terrence Anderson at the University of Toronto. His studies found the same results as many other studies, that vitamin C though necessary in the body doesn’t prevent the common cold. It does seem to lessen the length of time you have a cold by half a day on average and there is no need to take really high doses to achieve this. It appears that you can get the same effect as a very high dosage of vitamin C in a higher than usual dosage of 250mg during a cold when the cold ends you should return to the recommended daily value of 60mg. Do you ever feel like there is not enough time in the day? That you are being chased or in quicksand? We are in a land of information overload. We are caught up in a culture that When information is not managed, can become one of the main causes of stress in our lives. We live in a world that is extremely masculine. We value quick answers, saving time, productivity, and efficiency. We are a masculine culture that rewards working hard, pushing limits, and being constantly busy. These values have led many Americans to feeling like they are constantly under pressure or being chased.

Many Americans don’t know what the best ways to relax are and have forgotten that stress and laughter are connected.

Americans are constantly in a state of flight or fight mode, which means that adrenaline is constantly being released into our bodies. This has led to adrenaline overload. We are using adrenaline as our main source of fuel. This is on of the main causes of stress in our lives. When our bodies have too much adrenaline in our systems, it leads to adrenal failure or overload. So how does one manage staying out of this hyper vigilant state? Learning how to protect your adrenals and reducing your reliance on adrenaline, caffeine, and sugar is one of the first steps.

1) Get your adrenals tested. Go see a natural health care practitioner and have them test your adrenals.

2) Slowly start weaning yourself off or sugar, processed foods, caffeine, junk food and carbs.

3) Do a liver cleanse to remove toxins from your system and jump start your metabolism.

4) Get outside and take a brisk walk without any distractions, slow your mind down, leave the headphones and music at home.

5) Breathe! Deep breathing is a wonderful stress reducer. Bring your attention to breathing deeply and within your belly.

6) Schedule plenty of time around your meetings, so you have some down time throughout your day to play a little and laugh.

7) Laugh more. Do something goofy everyday, or watch something funny.

8) Learn to say no. Prioritize what is important to you and don’t be a slave to your phone/schedule. Check your voicemail and e-mail twice a day.

Remember life is too short. If you burn out your adrenals today, you could potentially develop chronic fatigue or a chronic health issue for the rest of your life. Take time to find the best ways to relax that work for you. The main causes of stress in our society today revolve around constantly feeling like we need to stay busy. Foster more down
time around you, do something that is creative, schedule a day where you have no engagements (you can do anything you want for the day with no time constraints). Laugh, the amount of laughing you do in a day effects your health.

Stress and laughter are connected. Make sure to laugh and smile every day.  Sharon has worked in the wellness field for over 10 years. She has a M.A. in Counseling and Psychotherapy and owns,

A research report from the November 8, 2006 issue of the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research shows the benefits of chiropractic care for patients suffering from vertigo. In this study 60 patients who were diagnosed by their medical physicians as having various forms of vertigo, received chiropractic care and the results were documented and published.

Vertigo is a condition characterized by dizziness with a sensation of spinning.  Because of the feeling of movement or rotation, many sufferers also feel nausea and can experience lightheadedness and balance problems.  The diagnosis of vertigo is typically based on the symptoms of the patients as there are not specific lab tests and the patients may have a variety of situations that seem to be related.  In this study, the nervous system was looked to for a causal relationship.

Of the 60 patients in this study, 56 reported having some form of physical trauma prior to the onset of their vertigo. Of these 25 had reported having automobile accidents, 16 had suffered a sports injury including skiing, bicycling, or horseback riding, and 6 slipped and fell on ice.  It was noted that all of these individual’s suffered trauma to either their head or neck area.

Upon initial examinations of the subjects, it was reported that vertebral subluxations were found in all 60 patients. Analysis procedures using paraspinal digital infrared imaging and laser-aligned radiography, were performed in order to have a consistent means of measuring subluxation findings and progress of correction.

Specific chiropractic care for the correction of subluxations was rendered to all 60 subjects in this study. The results showed that all of the patients in this study responded positively to the chiropractic care. The time frame for the responses varied from between one and 6 months.  Of the original 60 patients, 48 were totally symptom free within six months. The remaining 12 patients had also shown good improvement by either decreases in severity or frequency in episodes of vertigo.

In the conclusion, the author of the study noted, “A causal link between trauma-induced upper cervical (neck) injury and the onset of vertigo appears to exist. Correcting the injury to the upper cervical spine through the use of IUCCA protocol (a form of chiropractic care) appears to improve and/or reverse vertigo disorders.”

Body detoxification or colon cleansing has many known recognized health benefits. Colon cleansing and body detoxification are closely related except that body detoxification encompasses the whole body unlike the centered approach that cleansing the colon provides. Because it focuses on the colon itself it has a tendency to give faster results.

Colonic irrigation is a phrase that should not be blurred with cleansing the colon, although many people mix-up the two. These days the harmful toxins can be eliminated using home based interventions that are readily obtainable.

The majority of specialists would propose that a high quality cleansing the colon product should be engaged at least once or twice every year. The body’s digestive system takes in toxins, and detrimental fecal waste accumulates which can be got rid of when the colon is cleansed.

Loss of vitality, headaches, irregularity, acne and bad breath are just a few of a number of symptoms that suggest a toxic buildup. The increase of these toxins and fecal matter is very detrimental and could lead to fatal diseases such as the cancer of the colon.

The American Center for Disease Control and Prevention proved that cancer of the colon is the second largest cause of cancer deaths in the US and this can be attributed to bad food intake, harmful eating and food practices.

Another essential benefit is reducing excess weight and getting rid of unnecessary body fats. The normal colon measures around five or six feet long and can furnish room for around 20 lbs of fecal matter. Nevertheless, as the years pass by without intervention and a specific fiber diet program, some of this fecal matter becomes amassed in the colon and intestinal lining, increasing the total body weight of the individual by several pounds.

It can also add to the bulky midriff of a person or frequently known as apple corpulence or simply the dreaded beer belly. By going through a colon cleanse regimen, you can easily get rid of these situations and you can shed about 5 pounds from your body.

While there are known natural methods of cleansing the colon such as drinking salt water, none of these processes are as effective as other natural products such as licorice root, whole grains and acai berries. The majority of organic products are made up of a natural selection of herbs that assist in cleansing the colon and get rid of those harmful toxins from the body. The result is regular bowel movements, in addition to a more healthy body and appearance.

Correct Posture Month

May is Correct Posture Month.  In a May 6, 2004 Yahoo news release is a story from the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) proclaiming May as Correct Posture Month. The article notes that a new study published in the journal ‘Spine’ revealed an urgent need for health promotion programs to increase awareness and reduce risks in the school environment, such as heavy backpacks, desks and chairs that don’t fit their users, and an absence of physical activity during recess.

During Correct Posture Month, the ACA is urging school administrators, teachers, and parents’ organizations to more closely examine these unexpected dangers lurking in our schools. Parents and schools need to become more aware of the risks associated with heavy backpacks, improper computer ergonomics and physical inactivity.

The article listed a series of recommendations related to posture in several different categories.  These are:

* Make sure your child’s backpack weighs no more than 10 percent of his or her bodyweight.  A backpack should never hang more than four inches below the waistline.
* Make sure your child’s workstation chair fits him or her correctly.  Limit your child’s time at the computer and make sure he or she takes periodic breaks during computing time.
* Children should participate in at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day.
* Make sure your kids are getting plenty of rest.

The release noted that young children are suffering from back pain much earlier than previous generations, and the use of overweight backpacks is a contributing factor. The release also noted that at least 70 percent of America’s 30 million elementary school students use computers, according to a recent New York Times article. As a result, many children are already suffering from chronic pain in the hands, back, neck and shoulders, as well as repetitive motion injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome.

The release also recommends chiropractic care for children. They note that a doctor of chiropractic can offer advice on lifestyle changes to keep children fit and healthy.

Ditch the Stuff for Experiences

by: Veronica

We live in a world of complete materialism, it seems, with men and women everywhere in passionate pursuit of, well, stuff.  Many of us have become quite obsessed about keeping up with the Joneses and having the latest and greatest gadgets and electronics and cars.  This is what many have been taught will make them feel happy and fulfilled.  But is this what truly makes us happy in life?

A new psychology study joins the many previous studies on the subject, in suggesting that buying life experiences rather than material possessions leads to greater happiness for the consumer and those around them.  The study, out of San Francisco State University found that purchases of an experience, such as a meal out or theater tickets, result in an increased feeling of well-being because these experiences satisfy needs related to feeling socially connected and vital, a feeling of being alive.  Interestingly, many people still believe that more money will make them happy, even though 30+ years of research has suggested that the opposite is true.
But people in fact do need money in order to get some of the finer life experiences.  So what if you don’t have loads of money and want to stock up on the best of life’s experiences?  Here are some simple ideas to enrich your vitality without breaking the bank:

• Plan a picnic in your local nature park
• Take a road trip out to the country
• Visit your local museums
• Plan a romantic dinner at home with candles and a movie
• Head to the beach for a day
• Spend a day at the local library
• Look for free local lectures in the newspaper
• Go swimming in a local pond or lake with the kids
• Remember board games?  They’re a great way to bond and have some low budget fun

Two new studies help to show the power of nutrition to assist allergies and asthma. In one study people with higher levels of folic acid in their blood had had fewer IgE antibodies, fewer reported allergies, less wheezing and lower likelihood of asthma. In another study researchers found that lower blood levels of vitamin D in children were linked to allergy and asthma severity.

There is a national epidemic of asthma in children, in part due to obesity and in part due to the overuse of antibiotics that has caused an overgrowth of Candida, in turn causing excessive production of airway inflammatory signals coming from the Candida.

Nutrients are certainly important and low levels of key nutrients may allow such problems to manifest. Magnesium has long been known to be lacking in individuals with allergies and asthma. Vitamin C and bioflavonoids, especially quercetin, are of immense help.

In the new folic acid study researchers look at medical records of 8,000 people ages 2 to 85, comparing folic acid blood levels to levels of IgE antibodies, a key immune system marker that elevates to an allergen. People with higher blood levels of folate had fewer IgE antibodies, fewer reported allergies, less wheezing and lower likelihood of asthma. The researchers believed that folic acid was acting to help reduce inflammation.

Our findings are a clear indication that folic acid may indeed help regulate immune response to allergens, and may reduce allergy and asthma symptoms, says lead investigator Elizabeth Matsui, M.D. M.H.S., pediatric allergist at Hopkins Children’s.

In the new vitamin D study the researchers found that children with lower vitamin D levels were significantly more likely to have been hospitalized for asthma in the previous year, tended to have airways with increased hyperreactivity and were likely to have used more inhaled corticosteroids, all signifying higher asthma severity. These children were also significantly more likely to have several markers of allergy, including dust-mite sensitivity.

It appears that nutrient deficiencies of common nutrients set the stage for excessive inflammatory reactions, which include allergy and asthma. Parents should obviously improve the quality of the diet of any child with such a problem.

The above question is the title of an article from the national publication, Parents and Kids, in the July 25, 2006 issue. The article was an informative contribution covering good information in a magazine whose self-proclaimed purpose is “A Guide to Smart Parenting From Baby to Preteen”.

The article starts by reviewing the fact that children are susceptible to spinal trauma that can have an effect on the nervous system. The article notes that, “Nerve system stress, left unaddressed, impairs the child’s ability to function in a state of optimal health and well-being.”  The article further notes that Chiropractors refer to this nerve system stress as subluxations of the bones of the spine and cranium.  They also note that these subluxations may not cause any immediate symptoms and that “pain and malfunction may not show up for many years.”

The recommendations from the article are that children should be checked soon after birth. They note that the birth process itself can have a damaging effect on spinal structures.  Although a traumatic birth process is surely reason for alarm, the article notes, “Even the most natural births are somewhat traumatic to the infant and may cause hidden nerve system damage.” Additionally, the article points out that,  “It has been shown that many children who experience symptoms of difficulty sleeping breastfeeding, digestion (colic and reflux), repeated ear and respiratory infections have impaired nerve system function.”

The author of the article notes that chiropractic care for children is specific and does not cause pain or discomfort. They provide a list of some of the more common reasons why you may want to consider having your child checked by a chiropractor.  These include; difficult birth, difficulty nursing, colic, reflux, trouble sleeping, ear infections, frequent colds and infections, allergies/asthma, behavioral problems (ADD), and postural abnormality, head tilt, high shoulder or hip.

The article concludes with a list provided by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (www.icpa4kids.org) of what they term, “Successful results from chiropractic care.”  This list includes;  increased immunity, fewer colds/infections, increased athletic potential, increased energy, relief from allergies/asthma, better sleep habits, reduction in hyperactivity, and scoliosis improvement.

Montreal, April 19, 2010 – Low back pain (or lumbago) is a common ailment often triggered by something as simple as lifting a suitcase. What is the best way to remedy the situation? An exercise machine designed specifically for back muscles could be the solution according to a new study published in the Journal of the American College of Sports Medicine.

“If you want to bring about physiological change to help the development and endurance of back muscles, you must focus your training on those specific muscles and not other muscular groups such as hip extensors,” says Christian Larivière, a professor at the Institut de recherche Robert-Sauvé en santé et en sécurité du travail (IRSST), who conducted the study with Université de Montréal researchers Bertrand Arsenault, Rubens A. Da Silva, Sylvie Nadeau, André Plamondon et Roger Vadeboncoeur.

The investigation requested that subjects aged 18 to 65 – some healthy and others with low back pain – complete various exercises.

In the Volume 6, No. 3, 2005 issue of the peer reviewed Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics is a scientifically reported case study of an infant suffering from seizures who was helped by chiropractic.

The child in this case study was a  5 month old boy who, according to his parents, cried continuously, slept minimally, and experienced up to 8 seizures per day. Additionally, the child recently had surgery to close sutures on the left side of his head.  The mother also noted that her son had a constant head tilt to the left and could not rotate his head and neck to the right.

The chiropractic examination on the child was difficult as it was noted that the infant was in severe distress and cried during the entire procedure.  However, it was determined that there were problems (subluxations) in various areas of the neck, mid back and lower spine.

Regular chiropractic adjustments were started and continued for several weeks, followed by periodic follow ups. The outcome of the care was immediately positive as the number of seizures started decreasing after the first adjustment.  Several weeks into the care the child seemed to have a regression for one day as he experienced five seizures in that day.  However, following this episode he was seizure free for the next week.  This was the first week of his life that he was seizure free.

By the sixth week of care the child’s life had been drastically changed for the better.  He was having no seizures between adjustments, he was sleeping all night and he was eating properly for a child his age.  The case study noted that these improvements represented a significant improvement to the child’s quality of life.

The author of the study, Nancy Brown, D.C., notes that each year approximately 150,000 children and adolescents have a seizure. She points out that seizures are a sudden onset of abnormal electrical discharges within the brain.  She further points out that the medical approach is to medicate in order to suppress the abnormal electrical impulses. However, she points out that there is no way to suppress the abnormal impulses without suppressing the normal ones which would be needed for normal function and development.  She states, “A chiropractic approach may therefore be of more benefit as it will correct the abnormal impulses not just suppress them.”
